Several years ago my friend Cheryl gave me a money tree plant. It looked something like this, with about five individual plants all twisted around each other:

Money trees are supposed to bring wealth, prosperity and good luck. Nice idea, right?
I think there must have been a brief period of time that the money tree was happy in my house. But at some point, it began a slow decline. First one of the individual plants would start dropping leaves and shrivel up, then another, and another. You get the point. Finally, I was down to just one single plant. That plant was like a little trouper though. It kept going when the others had long since faded. And then several months ago it, too, started to drop leaves. And though I knew as soon as it dropped its first leaf that there was no turning back for this money tree, I held out hope:
May I just note that watching a money tree die is completely disconcerting?
Anyhow, the very morning that the tile guy showed up to do the backsplash the money tree decided to give up entirely, dropping its final leaf:
Good grief. What have I done?!
