Last fall I planted three scraggly goldenrod plants (Solidago rugosa ‘Fireworks’). I’ve waited a year for them to do something impressive, and finally they have. While just about everything else in the yard has finished blooming (or long since died due to the drought), the goldenrod is putting on a three-foot show of, well, fireworks. The small flowers are bright yellow and do a great job attracting bees and butterflies.
Oh, and the deer and rabbits completely avoid the goldenrod which is reason enough to plant it around here.
I clipped several branches for my latest yard bouquet and even though I think the flowers have a more satisfying impact outside in the front yard, I still like them inside in a vase.
