Every so often I think we’d save a lot of money by getting rid of our television. We pay about $45 a month for our TV service, and that amount is a special introductory offer we got in January for signing up with a new provider. They’ll jack up the price at the end of this year. Sometimes I think we’d be better parents if we got rid of our TV. Lots of well-meaning parenting types are happy to talk about how awful television is for kids. Fundamentally, however, I like television and I’ve liked it for as long as I can remember.
Mark told me about this website he found last night that has the audio recordings of over 16,000 television theme songs. I just spent the last half hour reliving my childhood. Want to listen to the theme song to the Mary Tyler Moore Show, Welcome Back Kotter, Bewitched, or perhaps The Facts of Life? They have them all and many, many more.
So it seems to me that we’d be depriving Charlie of some really great pop-cultural memories if we got rid of our TV. What good parents we are to keep it around.
